It is offered five evenings per week and Saturday; most clients attend two to four evenings per week. Groups offered include: Process, Assignment, Gender, Multi-Family, Relapse Prevention, and other groups as needed. Clients and family members may attend the evening Educational Program. Clients meet with a Case Manager weekly to determine treatment goals and to monitor his/her progress. Clients also attend outside 12-Step meetings as a part of the Center’s holistic approach to treatment and recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions…

Q:     What will my evening schedule look like?
A: Your treatment plan is tailored to fit your schedule. This is discussed and decided during the first meeting with your case manager.

Q: How long is the program?
A: The Intensive Outpatient Program is typically about three months in duration, tailored to meet the needs of your individual treatment plan.

Q: What groups does the program offer?
A: It provides a wide range of group topics. You and your case manager will select the groups and a schedule suited to your treatment needs. Groups include Process (sharing), assignment (work on homework and present to the group), Gender and Mindfulness Skills Training (learn specific skills for emotion regulation). The Center also provides psycho-educational lectures Monday – Friday on various topics related to recovery.

Q: What kind of therapy will I receive?
A: You will meet with your case manager weekly. The Sequoia Center believes that Group Milieu Therapy is the treatment model of choice. Thus, the primary therapy you receive will be from groups you attend at the Center and at outside 12-Step meetings.

Q: What can my family expect?
A: Sequoia is proud to be a premier provider of family treatment and support services. Once assessed and admitted, each client along with his/her family or significant other is assigned to a Multi-Family Group that meets weekly in a group setting. Immediately following the Multi-Family Group, the family/significant other attends a support group without the client. Soon after admission, the family and client meet with a family therapist to discuss the important family issues relating to recovery. This is scheduled at the earliest convenience of the family members.

Frequently Asked Questions…

Q:     How is the Very Intensive Program different from the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

Family Program

At The Sequoia Center, we believe that the disease of addiction affects much more than the alcoholic or addict—it affects family, friends and co-workers. The addicted person is adversely affected in virtually every area of his or her life—physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

To help families break the cycle of addiction and heal in recovery, The Sequoia Center offers evenings and Saturday programs for family members and friends of clients. The Center provides a team of Marriage and Family Therapists who work with clients and families. Family members work on their own issues, develop self-care techniques, and learn how to support love ones in their recovery process.

We strongly encourage family and friends to attend the following: Family Workshop, Multi-Family Group, Family Process Group, and Education Program.

Family Workshop

Mindfulness Skills Training

The Sequoia Center offers Mindfulness based skills groups adapted from Marsha Linehan’s (1993) Skills Training Manual for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder. The skills are taught in standard format but slightly modified for an alcohol and drug treatment center. The skills groups train participants in four different areas: Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Distress Tolerance, and Emotional Regulation.

Mindfulness practice in treating addiction helps clients to detach from their cravings and urges by becoming aware of any thoughts or feelings that lead to anxiety. Mindfulness is training the mind to be less reactive and more stable. Mindfulness breathing trains the mind to be present in the moment, just as it is, without the distraction of anticipating the future or worrying about the past.

Frequently Asked Questions…

A: No, Skills training has been found to be effective for individuals with co-occurring substance abuse, mood and anxiety disorders.

Q: Do I have to be a client at the Sequoia Center to enroll in the Skills? Training class?
A: No, Skills groups are available to any one in recovery with mood and/or anxiety disorders who want to learn Mindfulness based skills.

A: DBT Skills groups in the Outpatient program run from eight months to one year. We ask participants for a one-year commitment.
